A friend working in auditing told me that a DAX-listed company recently discovered a faulty ratio which was published in their regular financial statements for years. It couldn't be right, because the result suddenly became negative and that was impossible. So after years they checked the spreadsheet formula and... discovered it used a wrong cell for the calculation.
Never mind that nobody could explain the purpose of this ratio in the first place. "You have to look at the ratio as a comparison over the years." Well, if it doesn't make sense as a ratio, why should it make more sense as a comparison over several years?
