Online Mindmappers

It's a web 2.0 service of course. Over the summer I wrote a couple of blogposts about mindmapping here. Without naming a favourite here are the contenders so far:

  1. MindMeister.com

  2. Mind42.com

  3. CoMapping.com

  4. MindOmo.com

  5. WiseMapping.com

I still haven't had the time to compare them in detail, the interesting question is how do they differentiate themselves.
A question to anybody in the know: Is any of these services based on the freemind opensource code, or is using some of it? If not, why not?

  1. I saw some discussion at the FreeMind forum about whether these mind mapping services had lifted FreeMind code without acknowledgement, and the consensus seemed to be that they hadn't. That's not exactly a definitive answer, but the discussion died down quickly. Several mindmappers use the FreeMind file format for import and export, of course, but as that's just a zipped up XML file.

I collect details of information mapping and info management tools. In addition to the five mind mapping tools you mentioned, you might want to browse through twelve others. These are all web-based applications that do mind mapping and concept mapping.

bubbl.us Collaborative mind mapping (radiant format not enforced)
    bubble-mind.com Collaborative mind mapping
glinkr.net Concept mapping and mind mapping (shared but not collaborative)
kayuda.com Collaborative concept mapping and mind mapping
mappio.com Unusual mind mapper where the user edits indented text to change the mind map
mapul.com Collaborative mind mapping with an organic flavour
wikimindmap.org Make mind maps from WikiMedia articles
    webofweb.net Collaborative mind mapping

And there are some diagramming tools that have mind mapping functions built in as well:
cumulatelabs.com/cumulatedraw/ Collaborative diagramming – can draw mind maps and concept maps
flowchart.com Collaborative diagramming – can draw mind maps and concept maps
gliffy.com Collaborative diagramming – can draw mind maps and concept maps
thinkature.com Collaborative on-line whiteboard service - can draw mind maps and concept maps
